Art 2 Wear is a student run fashion show that has been taking place in the College of Design since 2002. Fibers and Surface Design students from the College of Design and Textile students from the College of Textiles create lines of clothing that are worn and showcased in a themed fashion show. An animator from the animation department always creates the on-screen motion graphics and information slides, and in 2012 it was me.
My part in the show was fairly simple in comparison to the fashion designers, however, I had a lot of responsibility to the sponsors and to the designers. Since I was responsible for everything that came on screen I had to stay up to date on all the shows sponsors and events, and design elements within the branding constraints to run fluently throughout the show. It was a difficult challenge to organize the vast amount of information that was on the needed to put the show together. I also was responsible for creating a motion graphic animation of their pre-existing logo that still spoke the same language of the rest of the show.
Due to the nature of organizing events, I knew that my job would get more difficult, the closer it got to the show, because many things would change quickly. To prepare, I set up a very detailed organization system for myself to be able to handle the flood of new information I received within the last week prior to the show. This allowed me to easily sort through all the media without much thought so I could focus my mind on seeing the things I didn’t currently have and find to the right people to obtain the missing elements in adequate time for them to make it into the final render.
For the animated logo I was given the main poster design and told to make the logo animation “edgy”. My first inspiration came from an MTV spot designed and animated by Enrico Lambiase and Giovanni Bucci. I also looked at a logo animation made by the UK based company Tresdigital for the Brighton Fashion Week, and a short film called “F L U X” by Candas Sisman, all of which can be seen below. After looking at these examples I started doing a lot of experiments to try and find a visual language that meshed well with the show. This was challenging for me. After several meetings with the show’s Graphic Designer I got more insight into what they were going for when they shared with me a music video from the artist Madonna called “4 Minutes.” In the music video there is a shiny morphing polygonal blob that grows and methodically engulfs everything in each scene. I began by first trying to imitate the effect, and then to find a way to integrate it within the constraints of the logo animation. I choose to flatten the effect so it won’t overtake the logo. You can see the very first concept and the final logo animation below.
This project gave me a great amount of experience working with people outside of my discipline. It was a great design challenge and responsibility to use my skillset to find the identity of the show. Everyone was happy with the results and the show was a huge success. A documentary was put together covering the entire production and an article was printed in the News & Observer. Although my part was not mentioned it still felt great to have done work for an event that successful on many levels. Unfortunately the day of the event I was unable to come until mid-show because I won an award (Harlem Ebony Award – Best Male in Design – 2012). Nonetheless it was an excellent experience and I enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to see the show next year.[/expand]
